     Welcome 2017!


    As we kick off a new year, I wanted to reach out to the membership and express my gratitude for the opportunity to lead The Southern California Relocation Council (SCRC) for the next two years as well as let you know about some of the new initiatives the new board will be exploring  for the 2017-2018 term.


    SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES


    We have redesigned our Sponsorship Programs to provide both annual sponsorships as well as individual meeting sponsorships for 2017.  By making this change we are able to provide more marketing exposure and benefits to our sponsors as well as drive a slight increase in SCRC revenue which will allow us the financial resources to expand our program offerings for our members in 2017. This could include better programs including paid professional speakers.


    CORPORATE ENGAGEMENT


    To kick off the year we launched a corporate engagement survey to provide our corporate members an opportunity to steer our direction in 2017-2018. This survey is capturing the impressions of our corporate member base in areas such as meeting locations, format and content. This data will be instrumental in driving greater corporate participation in 2017-2018.


    MEETING FORMAT


    We are planning to experiment with various meeting formats for 2017 and 2018.  Without abandoning our current format of lunch meetings, we hope to experiment with other meeting options such as a full day conference, breakfast meetings and afternoon meetings to provide more options to our membership.


    KICK OFF MEETING


    Finally, as we kick off the New Year, I wanted to talk about our upcoming kick off meeting on February 1st. This event is designed to be a fun event - an evening of reconnecting with friends and colleagues and raising money for SCRC’s charities – Working Wardrobes and our member charity, Find Cures.  Highlights of this event include some fun country line dancing lessons from Kerry Kick, Orange County’s top line dancing instructor as well as our annual Silent Auction. So dress in a casual country western style if you are so inclined, bring your wallet to bid on our donated prizes and join us on the dance floor for a little organized humiliation!


    Once again I want to thank all of our members who have placed their trust in myself and the rest of the SCRC board to lead the organization for the next two years.     Dual careers are a reality of today’s workforce.  The International Dual Career Network (IDCN) is the first of its kind bringing together the spouses of relocated employees of multi-national and local organizations in Los Angeles to provide a mutually beneficial job-search and recruiting platform.


    The International Dual Career Network is expanding the network to include all relocated spouses (domestically relocated and international) of employees within corporations in the Los Angeles area.


    IDCN Brief overview:

    In 2011, Nestlé and Ernst and Young launched the International Dual Career Network in Switzerland.


    • IDCN is a network composed of companies who are located in the Greater Los Angeles area and are participating for at least one of the following reasons:

    • o   They have employees relocating to Los Angeles from other countries or states with trailing spouses who are also professionals and looking for jobs in the local area. 
    • o   Companies are utilizing the IDCN as a recruitment platform to hire these qualified relocated spouses for their open professional positions. 

    If you are interested in learning more about the IDCN, and how you can participate and benefit from it, we invite you to attend the next International Dual Career Network event. We encourage you to also invite other HR Professionals within your organization; Head of Human Resources, Head of Mobility, Head of Recruitment, Head of Diversity.  This could also serve as a great networking platform with a variety of key stake holders from other companies who will be in attendance.

      President's Message

    As we venture into 2014 what comes to your mind?  Have you set your goals to improve your top and/or bottom line?  Improve service delivery or possibly the challenge of hiring the best and brightest for your company in an extremely competitive field or market?  Whether it’s business development, recruiting, operations or managing global talent, relocation and the services surrounding it will most likely play a part.


    Recapping some of our successes from last year, our first meeting in March was held at Taco Bell headquarters and our corporate board member Heather Sheira kicked off the year with 10 attendees.  June was held in Costa Mesa and led by Peggy Smith of Worldwide ERC with 8 attendees. Finally, our November meeting at the Queen Mary led by Heather Sheira, had 12 corporate attendees. We look forward to keeping the momentum this year as well. 


    SCRC continually strives to address the needs of our member community and present topics that are relevant and interesting to everyone.  We have had terrific feedback on our 2013 programs and based on survey feedback, we have already set programs for 2014 that will include Economic and Real Estate updates, Understanding the Complexity of a Relocation RFP, and International Relocation Best Practices!  


    Thank you to everyone that has renewed or registered to be a part of SCRC this year. We are already at an incredible count of 78 active members YTD, 19 of which are corporate.


    I would also like to generously thank the board for their support and commitment to this organization.  It takes a special kind of person to volunteer their time and energy to a specific organization.  The global mobility world is full of fantastic individuals and I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to lead this group for the 2013 & 2014 term.  The first thing I would like you to consider is renewing your membership with SCRC if you haven’t done so already.  The organization offers so many opportunities to network with your colleagues as well earn CRP credits for educational sessions.


    We are always looking for more energy in our organization and invite any of our members to participate on various committees.  This is an exciting and productive time for SCRC so please join me in the collaboration to empower our members to succeed personally and professionally and have a fantastic 2014!  I invite you to reach out to me anytime to talk about our organization.

    SCRC is already planning out a fantastic schedule for 2014. Here is what we are planning:

    February - SCRC will have an Economist that will be helping us kick-off the year for a look to the future as well as a So. Cal real estate update.

    June - RFP Best Practices and how to best position your company for success whether creating or responding to a relocation RFP.

    November - Ensuring security for your assignees and a deep dive into international emerging markets. 

    We will be making announcements about speakers, venues and dates as we get close to the events.

Her team continues to enhance the immigration technology that is used by millions of international employees and their HR/Legal colleagues (www.trackercorp.com). She received degrees from Stanford and Harvard Universities, and the University of California - Hastings College of Law.

    Sameer Khedekar, Partner - Pearl Law Group
    Sameer is "recommended for his well-developed knowledge of employment-based immigration issues" and "truly global focus." (Chambers USA Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers). He is also named by SuperLawyers and the International Who's Who of Corporate Immigration Attorneys. Overseeing a wide variety of immigration matters for Fortune 1000 to start-up companies, he helps employers customize workflows and reporting tools, using the flexible Tracker system.
    He received degrees from the University of California, San Diego and Santa Clara University School of Law.

    GLOBAL MOBILITY PANEL
    The Walt Disney Company: Antonella Miscio
    During the last 18 years, Antonella Miscio has held a series of Relocation related positions, culminating in her current role as Sr. Global Mobility Manager at Disney.

    Born in Milan, Italy, Antonella derives empathy for relocating employees from her personal experience, having relocated to the U.S. at a young age. Disney, an internationally renowned entertainment company, headquartered in Southern California, employs circa 133,000 cast members worldwide.

     

    In addition to current project related relocation's to China, Disney Global Mobility also relocates assignees for several segments such as ABC, ESPN, Lukas Film, Consumer Products, and many other enterprises. Domestically, Disney relocates about 1,600 people within the U.S. yearly.

    Edwards Life Sciences: Heather Sheira, CRP
    Heather is responsible for managing the mobility program at Edwards Lifesciences where she has been for over 13 years. She was responsible for building global compensation, benefits and HR systems for Edwards' 31 countries outside of the United States.
    As an active member of the Worldwide Employee Relocation Council (ERC), Heather has been a speaker and moderator at national conferences. She has just completed a two-year term serving as a member of the Worldwide ERC's U.S. Advisory Committee, whose purpose is to highlight emerging trends, and identify opportunities for the growth and betterment of the mobility profession.


    Heather received her Bachelor of Commerce, with a minor in business communications, from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. She has held her Certified Relocation Professional (CRP) designation since 2008.


    Lexicon Relocation: Christian Ter-Nedden

    Christian has 10 years of corporate relocation experience and provides the single point of coordination and counseling for relocating employees moving within the United States and internationally. He handles all aspects of domestic relocation and assignment management services for Lexicon clients and has extensive experience in servicing the needs of corporate clients that require a blended service delivery structure for domestic and international moves. In addition to managing domestic and international assignments, Christian’s experience includes managing Domestic and International Short Term Assignments. He is an award winning counselor and has participated on numerous key strategic initiatives for Lexicon Relocation. Christian is bilingual, speaking English and German, and conversational French.

     

    Prior to joining Lexicon, Christian served as a Senior International Counselor and Team Leader for a large relocation company and as a language trainer for business in both German and English while studying in Switzerland and earning his Masters in Linguistics and English & American Literature.  He has served Fortune 500 clients, managed a portfolio of VIP moves, and played a key role in the development of his team members, training all aspects of global mobility.


    Aires Relocation: Dr. Sheri Sinaga
    Sheri has extensive background in domestic and international relocation with a depth of knowledge of the relocation industry and continuing trends.

    Sheri has been a member of the Employee Relocation Council (Worldwide ERC®) International Advisory Committee, a Worldwide ERC® Faculty Member and a member of the Worldwide ERC® International Forum Planning Committee. She has also been reappointed by Worldwide ERC® to serve as Chair of the Global Mobility Specialist (GMS) Recertification Committee for a second one-year term.


    Sheri completed her doctorate program at the prestigious Union Institute, Cincinnati, OH in Intercultural communications in International Business. She has lived, worked and traveled to 45 countries.
